Anglers Lane

Is it true that Anglers Lane just off the Kentish Town Road was actually a stream/river and does anyone know when it was paved over. I have traced back some ancestors who lived on this Lane and want more information on the history, thanks for any help!!

  1. The River you are talking about is called the River Fleet and is the largest subterranean river in London. There were two streams on Hampstead Heath, each is now dammed into a series of ponds made in the 18th century, the Hampstead Ponds and the Highgate Ponds.

At the south edge of Hampstead Heath these two streams go underground as sewers which join in Camden Town. Originally the river ran through Kentish Town (where the High Street is now, winding off down Angler's Lane) and often burst its banks.

  2. It was paved over at least 150 years ago, also check out the writing on the restaurant wall at the top of Anglers Lane, it talks about the river.

    Hello,
I have been speaking with my grandfather who has been telling me that our family used to play cricket for St. Pancras reform club. I have found some photographs and would love to finde out more. Games were on parliament hill, the club was just off anglers lane. His name is clifford hall. Any help appreciated as I'd love to play or resurrect the team!

  4. The writing on the restaurant wall has gone now - it was painted over a few months back.

The full history of Kentish Town, including Angler's Lane and the now-buried Fleet River, can be found in the fascinating urban history "The Fields Beneath" by Gillian Tindall.
