Blue badge fraud targeted in Camden and Kentish Town
Almost 400 blue badges, which identify disabled drivers, have been checked in Camden Town, Kentish Town and Belsize Park, as part of a crackdown in the area.
A week of action by officers from Camden Council, parking contractor NSL and the Vehicle Crime Working group from saw eight cases of blue badge fraud uncovered.
Seven vehicles were removed to the vehicle pound and one badge seized on street.
Councillor Chris Knight, executive member for environment at Camden Council, said: “Motorists who abuse the blue badge permit scheme may see it as a victimless crime but the truth is they are snatching parking spaces away from the most vulnerable members of society.
“Our message is clear, we are ever vigilant and will use every power at our disposal to detect the fraud, take enforcement action and if necessary name and shame the motorists we take to court.”
Each blue badge being used fraudulently is estimated to cost the taxpayer £5,000.
