Highgate magistrates fines car dealer for ‘clocking’ cars
A Haringey car dealer was fined £3,000 at Highgate Magistrates Court at the beginning of June for supplying a car which had had its recorded mileage reduced by nearly 90,000 miles.
The local man whose car lot was in Tottenham received the fine of £3,000 with costs of £1,331 for mis-describing the Mazda car, breaching the Consumer Protection From Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.
The man bought the three year old ex driving school car from an auction in Scotland, with warranted mileage of 110,000 miles.
He subsequently advertised it for sale at £4,300 with 19,000 miles on the clock. He claimed in court that the disparity in mileage was due to his installing a second hand dashboard which displayed the lower mileage reading.
Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said:
“The value of a car can change radically depending on its previous use and indicated mileage. In this case the car has had its mileage reduced by far more than the equivalent of going round the world three times!
“Consumers have a right to be told all of the material facts about a vehicle when they buy from a dealer and I am very pleased that the magistrates have taken this case so seriously.”
